The Story Behind This Year’s Homecoming Themes
BHS Senior Student Council members explain their choice of themes
This week is Buffalo High School’s homecoming. This year, BHS has adopted the homecoming dance theme of Night on the Bayou. For the week itself, the theme is What a Wonderful World. There will be dress-up days Monday through Friday this week to provoke school spirit and pride. This Saturday marks the Homecoming dance at 7 pm in the cafeteria.
Every year, Buffalo High School’s student council seniors meet countless times to discuss and plan homecoming events, such as themes, dress-up days, and the dance itself.
“This is my first year being on student council, so it’s been fun seeing the behind-the-scenes aspects of what goes into planning homecoming, like making posters, decorations, and having meetings for different things,” Elmara Doupu ‘27 said. “I hope students get some aspect of how much time and effort goes into homecoming, and it’s not just kids meeting and coming up with a random theme.”
“I’m a part of the decorations committee, so there is lots of planning that goes into how the dance ends up looking,” Braxton Teschendorf ‘27 said.
The theme for the week came naturally to the council.
“All of the seniors on student council met during the summer to discuss homecoming theme ideas,” Lilah Dongoski ‘27 said. “Many threw out some ideas, but Ireland had a great idea. She pitched the dress-up day theme ‘What a wonderful world,’ and we loved it.”
For the dance itself, the council struggled a bit more to come up with a theme.
“‘Night on the Bayou’ was pitched, and at first we were a little hesitant,” Dongoski said. “Ireland described what she envisioned for the dance, and we were on board really quickly. I love the theme, and although it has gotten some confusion, I believe once they see the dance they are going to be very happy.”
For members who feel like the themes have been repetitive throughout the years, this theme felt perfect.
“So before our meeting to come up with homecoming themes, I actually had a lot of ideas that we could do since I felt that for every homecoming week the dress-up days are always the same and the dance theme is never taken seriously,” Duopu said. “I went on my favorite app, Pinterest, and started saving pins and making boards of themes I thought would be a creative and unique look that I don’t think Buffalo High School has really done. I was really happy when the idea of Night on the Bayou was brought up because I had been saving Prince and the Frog-themed dances, so it was a dream come true in a way.”
Senior Student Council members are excited for homecoming this year!
“Us seniors are really trying to bring it this year for homecoming, and so far it’s working great, and I’m so glad I get to be a part of making it happen!” Dongoski said.
“I’m so excited for Saturday morning when the council gets together and decorates the cafeteria to bring our collective vision to life!” Teschendorf said.
