A Brilliant Beginning for Band
BHS Bands have their first concert this past Monday, October 26

This past Monday, October 26, the Buffalo High School band concert took place at 7pm in the PAC with performers including Jazz 1, Repertory band, Varsity band and Concert band.
Jazz 1 and Jazz 2 are extracurricular activities available for all music students, with a main focus on band members; though sometimes players can be from orchestra or even occasionally choir. Jazz 1 includes grades 10-12, and Jazz 2 is inclusive to all grades 9-12. Jazz 2 will make a later debut on December 7 at the band connections concert.
The concert began with Jazz 1, opening the night with “Come Sunday” before playing the Star Spangled Banner. The grand opening was followed by the song “Samba Ti Kaye”. After Jazz 1, the Repertory band played “Knights of Dunvegan” followed by “In a Gentle Rain” and finished their performance with “Moscow 1941”. Once Repertory’s performance concluded, Varsity Band played the songs “Fire Dance”, “A Scottish Rhapsody”, and ended with “Grease!” as a tribute to the upcoming musical production.
The final performance of the night was from Concert band, who played “Ireland: Of Legend and Lore” followed by “As Summer Was Just Beginning”, a song inspired by the death of famous actor James Dean. The concert finished with the performance of the song, “Khan”.
“[The concert] was kind of a learning experience,” Concert band and Jazz band member Katie Sleavin ‘27 said. “It definitely helped us know what to do to prepare more in the future.”
Another Concert band student, Kennedy Weiss ‘28, said “Honestly, that’s the best we’ve played our songs. [As a player] it’s easier to critique what you play than say something good, but I’d say we did pretty well.”
During the concert, several students were celebrated for their award as September students of the month, including Paxton Paumen and Karston Perkins for Repertory, Simeon Dahn for Varsity, and Henry Eiden for Concert. Mr. Curtis, returning for his second school year, says he has high hopes for Band following this strong performance.
Overall, the night showcased the hard work and growth of Buffalo High School’s band students, setting a positive tone for their upcoming performances throughout the school year.
