Juniors at BHS successfully organize their own pickleball club

In the past month, a new club has arisen at Buffalo High School. Students Mira Prell ‘27 and Rosary Gilbertson ‘27 came together to form a pickleball club driven by their shared love for the game.

“I’ve always wanted to start a pickleball club,” Prell said. “When I found out that Rosary played pickleball, I brought up the idea. We started planning in November.”

Prell and Gilbertson started this club to provide connections, a fun way to stay active, and to help people build their pickleball skills together. Their first few meetings have brought together students from different groups throughout the school.

“The goal for the club is to be a welcoming place where people can improve their skills and have fun,” Prell said. “The first few meetings have been great. People seem to really enjoy it; it has been hard with the weather, however.”

At their clubs, they play a friendly competition of doubles, listen to music together, and all enjoy a breakfast provided by the club. After the morning meetings end, they provide rides to the high school for any student who may need one.

Students who have participated in the first few meetings have found them to be an enjoyable way to spend time with friends and a great way to end the week or start their Friday.

At the meetings, we partner up and play low-stakes games that are really fun,” Isaac Ryder ‘27 said. “As a beginner with a lower-level skill, pickle ball club has helped me improve my skills. The experience has been very welcoming. Pickleball Club is a great place to be active, make friends, and have a great time.

Overall, Pickleball Club has proven to accomplish its goal of creating a space where anyone can join to play.

Prell and Gilbertson are excited to see where their club takes them in the future, and they hope to see all kinds of BHS students at their upcoming meetings. Their next meeting will be on Friday, May 1, at the Dague Avenue tennis courts from 7:15 am to 8:15 am.
