New Freedom Students enjoy more elective choices and independence than in middle school.

Increased Workload Higher academic expectations and more homework present new challenges.

Future Prep Teachers push students harder to prepare them for college and careers.
Throughout the 9th grade class, other students have enjoyed the new freedoms that come from the many elective choices at BHS.
“I think having the freedom to choose my classes is refreshing compared to middle school,” Davis Kelm ’30 said. “This helps with taking responsibility for yourself and your GPA.”
But with these new electives comes responsibility. Freshmen have been struggling to adjust to the amount of homework throughout the week, compared to middle school. “The expectations are higher than at middle school,” said Bienias, “and [the teachers] put more pressure on you to succeed.”
Why do the teachers push students harder in high school?
“I think it’s to set you up for success in the future and life, ” said Trista Hambrook ‘30. “This can translate to preparing for college and/or future jobs out of high school. Teachers want the best for us and to help us through our high school experience and prepare us for the next stage of our lives.”
