What’s Going On in the Biology Department?
Two classes, AP Biology and CIS Human Anatomy, are going to change curriculum and names for the 2026-2027 school year.
There will no longer be AP Biology next year, instead CIS Biology will take place. This CIS credit will come from Ridgewater College in Hutchinson, MN. CIS Biology will be the first of two credits from Ridgewater College offered to BHS students.
Currently, Science teacher, Kelli Barth, is the sole instructor of AP Biology and CIS Human Anatomy, which will continue into the 2026-2027 school year with the shift to CIS Biology.
“It was changed from AP to CIS Biology so that more sophomores have the option to pick between CIS Biology and regular biology, and so no one has to take the AP test,” Barth said. “I don’t know if I will like the new curriculum, but I’m sure it has its benefits.”
CIS Human Anatomy is currently taught through St. Cloud State University, which will be the second CIS credit offered by Ridgewater College. A new name for the course will be used as well. CIS Human Anatomy will be called CIS Human Anatomy and Physiology in the upcoming year.
“CIS Human Anatomy is a challenging class, I will not sugarcoat it,” Barth said. “The reason why the name and institution were changed was that it would be easier to transfer college credit to college when applying, since most anatomy classes include some part of physiology.”
These curriculum changes were made to increase accessibility to college-level STEM courses at BHS and increase credit transferability. The additions and changes being made to these classes are in alignment with Buffalo High School’s goal to allow students the path to graduate with a full package of CIS credits.
