The Same-Sex Marriage Amendment

One week from today, Minnesota voters will decide the fate of same-sex marriage in the state.

The Marriage Amendment has started a state-wide controversy about a constitutional ban on same sex marriage. It has also started some confusion since the amendment is trying to ban same-sex marriage. The controversy over the amendment has sparked some heated debates in the classrooms and hallways.

“One of our debates in American Experience some kids got so mad that they left the class.” said Delaney Nord.

Voting YES means that you do not want same-sex marriage, and marriage should only be one man and one women. Voting NO means that nothing will change, there just won’t be an amendment forbidding same-sex marriage.

Out of 200 students, 54.5% of them would vote NO, and 45.5% would vote YES.  The majority of  students who supported the amendment  said they base their decision on their  interpretation of  homosexuality as a sin. On the other hand, those to plan to vote no say the government isn’t run by The Bible. Not everyone believes in the Bible, so then why should it decide someone’s pursuit of happiness with another person?

“Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve,” said Frank Graham. “I get my beliefs from The Bible and it says that homosexuality is a sin. It’s how I was raised.”

“America was founded on freedom from religion, and everyone is given the unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,” said Cedric Jimenez. “If two people love each other, who are we to judge them for it?”

  1. Actually, I’m pretty sure god did create Adam, and Steve too. People need to stop being so naive and simple minded. I don’t care what your religious beliefs are. I guarantee that your God didn’t give you the right to judge other people, even if their views or decisions are different then yours. Whatever people do in their lifetime is not my concern, it is THEIR life. Whatever choices they make will effect them. If a person feels attracted to another man or woman, and you truly believe that it is wrong, don’t you think your god will take care of them long after we’re around? I don’t understand how people can base a political decision off religion. In my opinion, people should be able to be happy. If that means they love someone of the same gender, and want to marry that person, LET THEM. It’s what makes them happy! If this amendment doesn’t get shot down, you’re taking away people’s happiness. I promise you that if this amendment does pass, everyone who is against it now, will look back in 30, 40, maybe 50 years, and realize how arrogant and selfish they were being. I am for gay marriage, and if I could vote, I would vote NO.

  2. I am not against gay marriage, but I believe it should be between a man and a woman. I agree with you; if they want to marry someone of the same sex they should be able to. So if I could vote I would vote No.
