Seniors Should be Cautious When Changing Schedule
As Buffalo High School seniors are heading into the last half of their high school career, some students are rushing into their counselor’s office to switch classes, graduate early and pick up mentor ships.
“We see quite a few students that want to graduate early. Most of the time the conversation is what is your post high school plan and are you challenging yourself and preparing yourself for whatever your plan is,” said Counselor Jennifer Blair.
Many seniors like to have an easy schedule heading out of their high school career or graduate after third quarter is finished so when the dreaded “Senior Slide” hits, they won’t be jammed pack with work to do.
“A lot of time colleges don’t want to see students graduate early or make schedule changes. So we have to make sure that where they’re planning to go, the college is okay with what that change is too,” said Blair.
Seniors also think that since they have had three years of high school classes under their belt, and based on those three years of classes that the college or university that the student plans to attend will know that they are a good student.
“That is a huge misconception that students just assume oh I’ve already been accepted or I already know where I’m going, it’s really important that I talk about any changes you make in your schedule can affect an admissions decision,” said Blair.
It’s important that students are cautious and pay attention to their transcript, that their college or university they plan on attending is going to be okay with the changes or outcome of their final transcript.
“Schools can revoke your admissions at the end of the year when they receive your final transcript, so in July, you could be sitting there and have no place to go,” said Blair.
