As BHS students walk into the cafeteria during lunch, they are often greeted by tables promoting various activities, or selling tickets to different events. With Valentine’s Day approaching, SSU (Students Stepping Up) is selling Hershey’s Hugs and Kisses during lunch and as well as before school. For one dollar, students can buy a small bag of Hugs and Kisses and personalize a note for a friend. These will be delivered to their friends during class on Valentine’s Day.
“A lot of people don’t know what to give on Valentine’s Day; this is an easy solution,” said Senior Niels Olsen.
Students can use this as an opportunity to tell someone they care, or just to put a smile on someone’s face. Junior Emma Pearson sent four to her younger sister.
“I wrote ‘Four for you, Glen Coco! You go Glen Coco!’,” Pearson said. “We love Mean Girls, so I wanted to make her laugh.”
The money collected is not for a fundraiser; it only covers the cost of the Hugs and Kisses. Each year, SSU sends between 80 and 100 notes to students on Valentine’s Day through this project.
“Our intent is just to help out people who want to show others that they care,” said SSU Advisor Tracy Hulley. “It’s a nice thing to do.”
