History Teachers Help School Celebrate Veteran’s Day
Veterans Day, on November 11th, isn’t normally celebrated through out the school, but this year, BHS history teachers changed that.
History teacher Mrs. Hulley has had American History classes and World Study classes send letters to veterans for the past three years, that she sends to Vietnam Vet Gary Gullickson. Gullickson has been coming to speak to history classes at BHS for 10 years, in January and in May.
“When Gary began coming he talked to the classes about Vietnam,” said Hulley, “but now he talks more about making good choices, getting involved, and educating yourself.”
The letters to the Vets was just an extension of what Hulley has been doing for the last three years. She said they got about 50 letters from kids not in history classes.
“Gary brings the letters we send to VA hospitals and group homes and leaves them in waiting or common areas,” said Hulley, “and he tells me he wishes the kids could see the looks on the Veterans faces when they read the letters. It means so much to them.”
Mrs. Raymond also got involved this year, doing the “one dollar a student” fund, in hopes of raising one dollar for every student attending BHS. The money raised from that will go to the Armed Forces Service Center in the Minneapolis Airport. The AFCS is a place that Veterans can go while they are in the airport to get a drink and a snack, and find resources for Veterans.
