While some seniors are still waiting anxiously to find out who their roommates will be next year, others have already known who they will be living with for a while.
“I filled out an interest survey asking things like how late I stay up, how often I’m on the Internet, and if I drink or smoke,” said Senior Colm Macnab. “I wasn’t notified when my roommate was chosen, but one day I just went back to the roommate application on my college’s website and I had an e-mail telling me who my roommate was. We have talked a little bit over Facebook. I sent him a message and he responded. I found out that he’s from South Korea and is an international exchange student.”
Unlike Colm, certain seniors have not only found out who their roommates will be, but they have also gotten to know them by actually spending time with them.
“I met my roommate at orientation in March,” said Senior Danielle Nordin. “She then added me on Facebook and sent me a message asking if I wanted to be her roommate and I said yes. I’m not really nervous to live with her because when we met she seemed normal and cool. The only thing I’m a little nervous about is that she has a boyfriend going to the same school and I don’t really want him to be in the room all the time. For the most part I think that it will be fun because of the fact that we have a lot of common interests and I think we’ll get along well.”
Senior Beth Leipholtz has another unique situation. She met her roommate over a Facebook group for the College of Saint Benedict’s college. Since first talking to her through the internet, Leipholtz has already gotten together with her on more than one occasion.
“I starting talking to a girl on Facebook and we hit it off,” said Leipholtz. “She asked if I wanted to room with her and then we talked more about living situations. I have already hung out with her and we went to the Mall of America. She also came with me to BHS for the Godspell play.”
One of the benefits of getting to know your roommate before you move in is having some immediate comfort and knowledge about each other, and seniors can enjoy the time leading up to moving in.
“I’m most looking forward to going shopping with my roommate,” said Leipholtz. “We are going to Ikea to coordinate bedroom stuff. And her best friend is going to CSB just like mine, so it will be nice that we won’t have to spend all of our time together. Since we both have our best friend’s around it will be less stressful.”
