Club Francais

Club Français, or otherwise known at French club is a extra curricular activity for French students, or students who are interested in French. In the club they do activities that relate to French or the francophone world.  French club started in 2007 by two seniors who approached French Club Adviser and Teacher Jason Swanson. Those two seniors did all the back ground work and got it started. The club now meets once per month for a meeting, and once per month for an activity.

“The group for activities has become smaller because there is no activity bus, or don’t have a way to get home, ”  said Swanson.

Every year there are set activities that they will do, and there are activities which the members discuss the activity. In January the club will always do the Tire Sur la Neige which is where they make caramel and pour it over snow. During the month of February they always celebrate Mardi Gras by having a party and making crepe, which according to Merriam Webster Online Dictionary crepes are a small very thin pancake. Sometime in the spring they always play Petonque, which is close to the game we know as bocce ball.  They always set two movie nights a year which the students vote on. The movie picked either has to be filmed in France, made in France or have the main actor or actress be French. The moveis are brought in by a French club member, or are rented or brought by Swanson.  All funding is one hundred percent self funded.  Some events are paid in advance,  or are free.

“We don’t get any district funding for it,” said Swanson. “I volunteer my time to do it.”

On December 10,2009 they had one out of the two movie nights. The club members voted on Chocolat. Chocolat was filmed in France, and stars Juliette Binoche, the  main actress who is from France. For this activity there weren’t many students out of the seventy students able to come, but at least fifty students come to the meetings.

“Eventually [French Club] will have to be only French students because times fifty or more students are at meetings,” said Swanson.
