Buffalo High School’s First Student Walkout Since 2022
Students organize peaceful walkout to show support for their community
At high schools throughout Minnesota, students are participating in peaceful walkouts to practice their First Amendment rights of freedom of speech and assembly. Students are collectively leaving their classrooms to express their opinions and speak out against the ICE raids occurring in Minnesota.
On Monday, January 26, students at Buffalo High School will partake in their own organized peaceful walkout. This was put together by the Courageous Conversations student-run group at Buffalo High School; they encourage other students to join them, providing the details via their Instagram page: https://www.instagram.com/courageous_25/.
According to organizers, students plan to leave class before Fourth Hour, where the student-run group will lead participants outside of the school. The group’s stated goal of the walkout is to speak out against local ICE involvement, while showing care and support towards the community.
School administrators have been made aware of this walkout. While they are not promoting the event, the administration states they will be present to monitor the group; their goal is to ensure safety and minimal disruption to classrooms.
