Buffalo High School Offers Homework Help

With four classes a day for Buffalo High School students, having one or more tough classes can really put stress on a student.  Buffalo High School has tried to help relieve that stress by providing AAA, where students can go to one of their four classes for twenty minutes and get help if needed.  Other teachers have before or after school study sessions to help their students, like science teacher Charley Keifenheim, who has one every morning before a test.  For those who need more help, Buffalo High School now offers homework help.

From 2:30 pm-5:00 pm every Monday through Thursday, students can report to room c-115 to receive help from a tutor.  The tutor’s are mostly students who volunteer their time to help.  Many of the tutors are from the National Honor Society (NHS).  ELD teacher, Shana Bregenzer-Brenny is always there to help and assign a tutor.

“Whatever students need help with we try to give them resources,” said Bregenzer-Brenny.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, a math teacher comes to help any students and on Mondays and Wednesdays a reading teacher comes in.  Along with those two main subjects, most of the 9th and 10th graders required classes are also popular.  Big groups of students who have the same class will come to work on homework together.  A tutor will do every question with you, even having some people go up to the white board for difficult ones.  Students are also allowed to come in to work on projects and to make up tests.

“If AAA or before school isn’t enough time, students can come here to take their test,” said Bregenzer-Brenny.

Another benefit for going to homework help is that students can receive credit for a class.  The homework help can be like an extended day class, but with less homework.

“If a student failed or is failing a class they can come here for a certain amount of time, we record it, and they can receive credit for that class,” said Bregenzer-Brenny.

Due to the fact that there is no activity bus any more, there are less students coming in for help.  About 10 students a day come in so far this year, but Bregenzer-Brennyis hoping for more.  To get involved with homework help, whether it’s to be a tutor or to get help, just visit Bregenzer-Brenny in room c-115.

“I try to make it a relaxing place for kids to come.  I turn on the radio and kids can bring food,” said Bregenzer-Brenny.
