BHM Schools are not extending the school year (yet), even as neighboring districts add days due to cancellations
With five snow days under Buffalo High Schools’ belt, everyone is asking about what will happen next. Rockford has already taken away Presidents Day, and is making their kids go to school that day. St. Michael-Albertville has extended their school year. Minnesota state law says that each school district must have at least 170 open school days.
Buffalo School District has scheduled 174 open school days in the 18-19 school year calendar.
“Our next steps for the school district if we end up going below the 170 school days is that we will either have to have a staff development day and have that count as a school day,” Mischke states, “We could also take away a day that we don’t have school and have the kids go, but right now that isn’t an option.”
As of now Buffalo School District is not taking any action on extending or taking away any school days. But more snow days could spark the conversation of extending the rest of the school year.
On January 31, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said that schools will not be penalized if they do not make up for days lost to cold weather even if they fall below the 165 required days of instruction.
