Now is the Time to Seize the Day

Junior BCT actors prepare for opening night of Newsies.

Heading into February, Buffalo Community Theater presents Newsies. The children’s musical, based on a true story, is about how people are stronger through unity, and fighting for what they think is right.

The show will open on February 7th and run until the 16th, allowing a range of opportunities for the town to gather and support the annual show. Tickets can be found and purchased on their website, along with some more details about time, location, etc.

Having spent about a month and a half on this show, these kids have put in many hours working hard to create an amazing experience for the audience.

First-time actress, Clara Ditlevson, a fourth grader, plays character Scabs and is also a part of the ensemble. She loved getting to know her character and expressed major excitement for everything she’s gotten from being involved.

“I really like being a part of the community at the musical,” Ditlevson said. “I love learning new acting tips and being able to perform for the first time.”

BCT’s junior shows have given kids the ability to try something they’ve never done before and helped young kids find a new hobby while still having fun. Ditlevson discussed the best parts of her rehearsals and her experience with something so big in so little time.

“The best part of being in Newsies Jr. is choreographing all the dances and doing full run-throughs of the show when it’s put all together,” Ditlevson said.

With all the excitement running wild for the young actors and actresses, there has been such a large amount of things they’ve had to learn and do in their short rehearsal schedule. Along with the stress that comes with preparing for a show, Ditlevson showed great passion for what she is doing and is taking on the challenge not only now but hopefully in the future as well.

“I think and hope that I will continue in theatre because I feel I am really learning lots, getting to be in more major productions, and have bigger parts,” Ditlevson said.
