Knowledge Bowl Teams Prepare for Regions

Varisity 1 and 2 highlight a successful season for the biggest team in years

The Buffalo Knowledge Bowl teams are preparing to close their successful season, highlighted by the emergence of a strong Freshman JV team and five competitive Varsity teams vying for the team’s top two squads.

The Varsity 1 team has finished in the top ten at State for the past two years. The members are seniors Daniel Jungwirth, Lucas Lawrence, Kumail Akram, and Dexter Huss. The JV B team of freshmen? Trent Elletson, Harris Lux, Braeden Bezek, and Henry Umhoeffer has placed in the top three teams in all six meets this year.

The teams have been meeting in Mr. McCallum’s room, three days a week since November, facing their strongest competition in practice. The five Varsity teams and 3 JV teams regularly finish in the top 10% of all teams at meets.

“My team has performed very well this season, ” Trent Elletson ‘28 said. “I am the spokesperson and I think I have done a good job on deciding the correct answer and voicing it for my team.”

Knowledge Bowl is a competitive activity that relies on the knowledge and support of every team to work together. The teams are always pushing each other towards improvement.

“Every meet is an opportunity to get closer to my friends,” Kumail Akram ‘25 said. “We are serious about the Knowledge Bowl, but also laid back; we don’t expect each other to do everything perfectly. It feels good to get things right, but it’s not the end of the world when we get stuff wrong.”

Akram’s team finished fifth at State last year. With a hopeful outlook heading into sections during the first week of March, the varsity teams are looking to send their strongest teams toward State. Their next meet is on Saturday at North Branch. This is the last time these teams will compete as a full squad.
