Same-sex marriage applications available tomorrow
Minnesota is now the 12 state to legalize same-sex marriage. It is also the first state to pass it by a legislative vote. The bill giving all Minnesotans the freedom to marry any sex was signed by Gov. Mark Dayton on May 14.
“What a difference a year and an election can make in our state”, Dayton said after the law was passed.
Starting Junbe 6, Hennipen County will be accepting same-sex marriage license applications available to same-sex couples. If you are planning on getting married Aug 1st, the county recommends completing the application by July 27 to allow the 5 day waiting period.
The Minnesota state statute sets the price at $115 for a license, but if the couple completes 12 hours of premarital counseling th price could go down to around $40.
When purchasing a marriage license in Minnesota, it only allows you to be married in Minnesota; however, you do not need to be a Minnesota resident to be married. Marriage licenses last 6 months and you must file an application at least 5 days before your scheduled wedding date.
The new law officially comes in effect on August 1, 2013.
