From “Scabs” to “Salami Tommy”: Nicknames at BHS

Nicknames are very common in high school. Whether you like it or not, a nickname will usually stick,  sometimes  for your entire life.

You may have heard students from BHS being called by their nicknames, but have you ever wondered the origin of this unique name? Junior Thomas Gaughan has been given a variety of different nicknames.

“I’ve been nicknamed Roach, Salami Tommy, T- Fly #5 and Tommy Tip Toes,” said Gaughan. “My friends call me Roach because I supposedly look like a cockroach and Tommy Tip Toes because I guess I walked on my toes and when I was young I was good at pee-wee sports, so my dad named me T-Fly #5,  because my number was 5. And I don’t know what Tommy Salami means.”

Fellow Junior Noah Vanderkooi was also given a few nicknames by his friends.

“They call me the the blonde bi*** and the blonde witch because they say I cast sorcery and magic,” Vanderkooi said.

Other than students many teachers here at BHS have nicknames as well. Assistant Principal Brad Koltes was given the nickname “Scabs” while he was school.

“I had the name Scabs when I was younger, because I was always getting hurt and had scabs all over my body,” said Koltes.

Science Teacher Rachel Busch also has an interesting nickname from her youth.

“My friends and I would make videos as news anchors, and I played an old woman named Eunice then the name stuck,” said Busch.
