Buffalo Community Center writers’ group visits classes at BHS

The Buffalo Community Center Writer Group met with Mr. Robinson’s creative writing class last week. Who are they?

This is a group that was started nearly 20 years ago by Professor Frank Kazemek. Kazemek leads the group in their discovery of various writing methods and styles. Each week the group meets to discuss current writing projects, to learn new techniques and build their skills in story telling, poetry writing, and self discovery. This is an active social group, who make friends, share their experiences, and really have far too much fun in the process. The group used their poems mostly for personal use but every couple of years they try to publish a book. So far, the group has published 9 books and they are located in Buffalo’s Great River Regional Library.

This group also regularly works as an intergenerational workshop at the Community Center or Discovery Elementary, wherein Discovery School Students in Beverly Koopman’s class join the writer’s group for some fun, educational collaboration. Writing is a form of art and a way that these Buffalo seniors can express themselves. Not only are they able to create their own writings, but they help others in the community by influencing young generations and showing them that writing is a long process, whether you are young or old.

“My student’s love these seniors and they have shown them that writing is loved by people of all ages, and that words, when carefully chosen, can be emotionally moving, and intellectually stimulating. Those are big realizations for elementary students,” Bev Koopman said.

These gifted adults take their most valuable experiences and create a story; and throughout their writing process they are able to understand and learn about themselves.

They worked with Mr.Robinson’s class basically because they work with different generations.
