The Boys on the Buffalo Bison varsity golf team will be the first to tell you that they haven’t exactly been playing up to their expectations to start the 2011 season. However, with the sun shining over head last Thursday, May 5, the boys finally feel happy about their game.
“We finally put it all together” said freshman Hunter Bruhn. “We’ve been streaky all year long, but on Thursday we played the way were capable of playing.”
The Bison broke the previous school record of 304 (set last year) with Thursday’s performance of 302. Senior Alex Holtan led the team shooting a one over par round of 73. Junior Dan Bollant finished one stroke behind with a round of two over par 74. Senior Morgan Lubben contributed with a round of five over par 77, and Freshman Hunter Bruhn finished with a six over par round of 78.
“The best part about it is we can still improve” said Bruhn. “I missed a couple putts coming in and finished with two bogeys, and Morgan caught a bad break with a terrible lie after his tee shot on his 17th hole and ended up taking a triple on that hole. We could have been even lower without those couple strokes. But hey that’s golf. Sometimes you catch a bad break.”
Even with Buffalo shooting a school record of 302, they still finished second to the number two team in state Rogers, who shot an excellent team score of 296. Roger’s was led by the number one player in state senior McCabe Buege, who shot a round of six under 66. Buege was also the match medalist.
“We feel great about how we played” said senior Alex Holtan. “But we all know we can improve on little mistakes we made out there. We’re going to push hard to correct those and avoid making those same mistakes in future tournaments. But it’s definitely something we feel very happy about and are very proud of what we accomplished.”
