Boys’ Basketball rolls to 14-6 after winning Pat Sonju Memorial Game
The Boys’ Basketball team hosted Minnapolis South for its 12th annual memorial game in honor of Pat Sonju on Saturday. The varsity team won the game 59-47.
Sonju was the former head basketball coach who suddenly died in the fall of 1999. Usually taking place in late January or early February, Bison basketball celebrate the life of a loved coach by playing the game that he loved: Basketball.
This year the team raised money for the Pat Sonju Memorial Scholarship. This fund gives a $1000 scholarships to two Buffalo High School student athletes. The memorial scholarship has provided over $24,000 in scholarships in the past and currently has $42,000 in endowments. Instead of having admission to get into the game, the “admissions table” collected free-will donations that would go to support the scholarship fund. There was also a silent auction held and raffle drawings for gift cards, t-shirts, and sports memorabilia.
In eaerlier games that day, the ninth grade lost a close battle with South and both JV and Varsity pulled off wins.
JV finished with a score of 52-29 and freshman Zach Dahl had 18 points in the victory. Buffalo had a long bench compared to the Minneapolis South’s varsity team, but the score was kept close through the half and the Bison were leading 33-27. In the middle of the second half, Buffalo got a lead and pulled away with a 59-47 victory. Both Sophomore Collin Olmscheid and Junior Jason Senger had 10 points in the win.
The boys will take this week to prepare for a game against the Zimmerman Thunder on Thursday at 7:30 pm right here at BHS.
