The match came down to the wire in the last match as seventh grader Adam Treptau reversed a pinning predicament into a pinfall of his own. Treptau sealed the win for the Bison on Gerry Bakke Night, despite scoring fewer points in his match.
“Adam is like our dark horse out there,” said senior Carson Williams. “He doesn’t go for points when he wrestles, he just goes for pins. He’s gotten us out of some pretty tough spots this season.”
Treptau was one of four Bison who won via pinfall, along with sophomore Jonathan Wirkkala, junior Tanner Maus, and senior Gus Koppi.
“People think we’re crazy because we cut a lot of weight [for this sport],” said Wirkkala, “But it’s nights like this that make all that hard work worthwhile.”
The team started out strong as they won three straight matches by decision after having to forfeit the 103 lb. match.
Overall the Bison won 8 of the 11 matches they competed in on the night. Sophomore Cedric Jiminez, and juniors Lucas and Andrew Mock picked up wins on the undercard.
“I was just toying with my opponent out there,” said Andrew Mock, who won the 125 lb. match 4-2. “He had the upper hand on me at the beginning [leading 2-0], but he slowed down in the 3rd period and that’s when I attacked.
With the regular season in the books, the Bison now look towards the 2011 Sections tournament. The tournament began Friday, February 11 in Mound-Westonka.
