On just her second time swimming the 500 Butterfly, Senior Annika Bordak took first in a meet on October 6 against Becker.
“The first 100 was easy, because thats how much the normal Butterfly event is,” Bordak said. “By the 250 mark, I was dead. I wanted to quit but I just pushed through. When the 400 mark came by, I had a rythm down, so I just went a steady pace. The last 50, I saw the person on my right was right next to me, that’s when I started to sprint and it was neck and neck the hole way until it came down to the finish. I swam it in 6:31.”
“I guess it makes us look like a really strong team” said Junior Maddi Herzfeld.”It reflects well on the attitude on our team for someone to go above and beyond.”
The vitory inspired Bodak’s team.
“It makes me feel happy and proud that she can challenge herself to do something that not many people have even contemplated. ”said Girls swim coach Rachel Busch.
Annika is the only girl to try the 500 in the butterfly stroke in bison girls swimming history. This isn’t her first time swimming the 500 butterfly she has swam it once before in wave, but it was her first time trying it in a meet.
“The reason why I swam the 500 in the butterfly stroke is because I have swam it before and I wanted to better my time,“said Bordak.“I wanted to prove to myself I could do it so I decide to swim it at the meet against Becker.I didn’t want to swim the event in varsity, because I didn’t want to make Becker angry.”
Annika’s teammates say she knows and is friends with everyone on the swim team, which is part of the reason she is a team captian.
“She cares a lot about the others before herself, she is very team oriented,” Busch said. “Her goal is to make her whole relay team to state and not just her.”
