End of the Year Arts Finale

The cafeteria was filled with students, parents, and artwork on the night of June 2nd. It was the final art show and the last choir concert of the 2010-2011 school year.

Art students have been working hard all year in classes with Sheri Tampte, CiAnn Jackson, Jon Holtz, and John Gunderson. They finally got to show off their paintings, drawings, sculptures, and paper mache models. The seniors in the arts magnets program had to present their capstone projects.

“The capstone is basically our last time as seniors to show what we’ve been doing for the past four years, arts wise, and what we’re going to major in in college,” said Senior Ayjiah May. “The program has room for improvement, but it just gave [the arts magnet students] a chance to be independent and let us do our thing without an adult holding our hands and telling us what to do. In the real world, if you choose to be an artist nobody is going to sit there and hold your hand, you’re on your own.”

“Since I want to go to college for acting (and with a lot more training I will hopefully make a career about it) I decided to to a monologue. But I didn’t want to just go on stage and say a couple of lines, so I made a miniature set to help set the scene. It was difficult at times. It was personally really hard for me to settle on a monologue until I replaces my topic with one I was really passionate about, gay rights. It was a lot easier to emote when the subject hit home,” May explains.

There were two parts to the arts finale, performing and displaying. Besides acting, other students danced, presented films they made, read stories, or played music. There were also drawings, paintings, poetry, or sculptures. Senior Marisa Kolasa, who plans on studying cosmetology, displayed nail artwork, which was completely different than what her classmates did.

After the art show, everyone gathered into the PAC to watch the BHS choir perform their final concert.
