For many students, the morning isn’t complete without caffeine

From gas station Energy Drinks to the new Dunkin' Donuts drive-through, students have developed morning routines centered around their beverages of choice

Seeing people carrying around a coffee or some sort of drink in the halls of Buffalo High School is no surprise. In a survey we conducted around a small sample of students 76.2% of students surveyed said they get something to drink before school at least once a week.

70% of students who get drinks say it contains caffeine. Caffeine is a natural chemical with stimulant effects. It is found in many products including coffee, tea, cocoa, and cola. Research shows caffeine can help increase mental alertness and reduce tiredness, which can be a huge help for being in school.

“I usually feel muggy and unmotivated when I don’t have caffeine,” Junior Amelia Spooner said.

A lot of people said that they go to the place that is on their way and is most convenient for them. Caribou was the most visited location in the survey, this could be because there are three in Buffalo alone.

“Caribou has a lot of options for coffee and the service there is a great way to start my morning,” Spooner said “I love their iced campfire mocha, by far my most favorite drink there.”

Not everyone gets coffee in the morning, those non coffee drinkers also find a way to get their caffeine. Stopping at a gas station for their morning drink was the second most chosen option behind Caribou on the survey.

“I am not usually a coffee drinker,” Junior Devon Carroll said, “so before school I stop at Kwiktrip. My go-to drink is a Monster, which still contains caffeine.”

On average, coffee has a little more caffeine than an energy drink, but if you choose a really strong energy drink, you’ll consume over twice as much caffeine. A 12-ounce can of Original Monster has 120 milligrams of caffeine and 27 grams of sugar and a 12 ounce coffee has an average of 140 milligrams of caffeine.

For Buffalo High school caffeine has many positive effects on us all. Helping teachers stay happy and motivated throughout the day; keeping kids focused on listening and learning.
