“Last Chance Meet” gives track team last regular season win

The Buffalo varsity track team won their ‘Last Chance Meet’ Tuesday May 24 at the Buffalo Middle School Stadium. With this win, the Bison finish out the regular season with a 10-1 record, and their 11th top-2 finish.

“We’ve had a good year this year so far,” said head coach Scott Palmer. “Hopefully we can continue to improve and get better during sections [next week].”

The Bison pulled off wins in several races, including the boys’ 4-by-400 meter relay, 100-meter hurdles, and 300-meter hurdle races.

“At this point I’m not all that surprised as to how well we’re doing,” said senior captain Jerome Begin. “We have a lot of talent on the team, both [upper classmen] and [lower classmen].”

Begin, who won both the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdle races, set a personal best in the former; posting a time of 14.26 seconds.

“A record’s a record, but I’d take a win [over a record] anyday,” said Begin.

Senior Jon Wedemeier had an interesting ‘event’, to say the least, during the 2-mile run.

“I had the lead with three laps to go over two Monticello [runners],” said Wedemeier. “Suddenly my vision became blurry and I blacked out for a minute.”

“When I came to, I crossed the finish line in third place, about 30 seconds behind the Monticello [runners].”

Despite the heartbreaking loss in the 2-mile race, Wedemeier’s 3rd place finish was enough to give Buffalo the distinct lead in points, which lead to the team’s 10th victory of the season and 2nd at home.

“Some people think that just because we’ve won three straight conference titles that the pressure is on,” said Palmer. “But when you’re the defending champs, the pressure’s always on.”

“And if you look at the year we’ve had [thus far], we’ve handled the pressure pretty well going into sections.”

This was an invitational meet that included six other teams. Including Becker, Monticello, STMA, Rogers, Marshall, and Spectrum.

With the regular season over for track, the Bison look towards the 2011 Mississippi 8 2AA Sectional Tournament. Sections begin Wednesday June 1 at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter.
