On Monday in the Performing Arts Center, 100 Juniors and Seniors were inducted into the Buffalo High School Chapter of the National Honor Society.
NHS is a group for Juniors and Seniors that have a 10.0 GPA or higher. In the beginning of the year students that met these requirements and completed the application process were allowed to join the group on a temporary basis. In order to be officially inducted into NHS students were required to complete a total of 39 hours of community service (28 individual hours, 9 group hours, and 2 peer tutoring hours). A few of the events that NHS has organized and worked in this year are both Blood Drives, Toys for Tots, and Snow Daze.
Within the National Honor Society are Advisor Brigitta Bergquist and both the Senior and Junior Executive Councils. The Executive Council consists of nine students that were accepted into NHS and went through another application process. “The Execs” are chosen as Juniors and then continue their services as Executives through their Senior year. The Executive Council is responsible for conducting the monthly meetings and for organizing the big events such as Snow Daze.
And so, last night, students that maintained good grades and completed their community service were inducted. 42 new and second-time seniors were inducted as well as 58 juniors.
“I think it is a great honor to be able to serve our school and our country in such a way,” said Junior inductee Alex Larson.
During the ceremony, Seniors Elisabeth Leipholtz and Michelle Hansmann both gave a speech about their experiences in NHS from this year. The Junior (soon to be Senior) Executive Council was also introduced last night. The Council includes: Whitney Anderson, Michael Burgdorf, Erika Doimer, Andrew Gutknecht, Kaelie Lund, Beth Macnab, Michelle Nelson, Avery Schottler, and Hanna Svoboda.
