Hooky For Hockey

As the end of the third quarter nears, many students scramble to maintain their grades. Making up missed work due to absences can be stressful, however lots of students make an exception in March every year with one thing in mind, the Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament.

“I don’t even think twice about coming every year,” said Junior Jerame Schuetzle. “It’s well worth it to skip school.”

Jerame is not the only student that feels this way, numerous students were absent from school attending this event. The principals recognize how big the tournament really is, especially here in the “State Of Hockey” and are very understanding.

“As long as students are keeping up with school work, I encourage them to attend,” said Assistant Principal Kris Thompson. “We try to treat students as adults, and as long as they share mutual respect for their teachers by letting them know of their absence ahead of time, I don’t see a problem with it.”

The tournament came to a close Saturday night, with Edina coming out on top. They beat Lakeville North in the championship game with a final score of 8-2.  Although the tourney holds hockey at the center of attention, many students attend with other things in mind.

“The tourney is all about the concessions,” said Sophomore Ben Zitur jokingly, who purchased over $50 of food over the course of the weekend. Schuetzle disagreed, claiming it was about “scoping out the girls”.
