What does it cost to keep the school open for a day?

The Buffalo Hanover Montrose school district costs $306,000 to run for just one day.  All together, the district has a yearly $53.2 million budget, but that doesn’t just sit and not get used. It goes towards everything that makes a school run properly each day.

For instance 78% of that goes towards the teachers’ salaries. In the winter,  it’s about $45,000 alone to plow the parking lots. In the summer, it’s about that much to just mow all the lawns. BHM Schools has hundreds upon hundreds of acres they have to attend to each year. The district usually spends the most for maintenance in Winter, but it sometimes equals out that the summer and winter will spend the same amount.

“Seventy-five percent of every dollar goes directly to the classroom,” said Gary Kawlewski the District’s Finance and Operation Director.

Out of all the neighboring districts, BHM Schools spends the largest amount each year. The largest amount ever spent in a year was about $71 million in 2007-2008.

Kawlewski has been doing this job for three years, so he has went through so much technology in his life and business. To this day with all this new technology its easier for him to track things and keep track of everything. He uses it to look at and respond to data in the system.
